Just the other day, my family was talking about what classifies as a sandwich and what doesn't because of someones tweet or something. So, knowing that I'm right, I will share my knowledge with you all this morning.

What classifies as a Sandwich?

I believe that a sandwich doesn't follow its food items, texture, or flavor, but its physical composition. The requirements for a sandwich are:

  • To have 2 or more handheld items on the outermost opposite parallel layers, that hold various items inside

That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. Let me show you some...

Examples

Examples of a sandwich could include:

  • BLT

  • Ice Cream Sandwich

  • S'more

  • Peanut Butter Jelly Sandwich

All of these are sandwiches. Here's examples of what aren't sandwiches.

  • Hot Dogs w/ Bun (Intact)

  • Subway Sandwich

  • Burrito

  • Frosted Birthday Cake

Now there are some special rules that people might not like, but should be known. They're known as the...

Technicalities

When a hot dogs bun breaks into two, that is a sandwich, which is why hot dog places won't sell you a hot dog (normally) with the bun in two. Although in its name, a subway sandwich is a different entity altogether, as it has a bread hinge in which you fold to put the ingredients inside, similar to a hot dog. A burritos main breading is the tortilla, in which, is one big sheet wrapped in a certain way, which means it is not a sandwich but closer to a hot dog. An un-frosted birthday cake is a sandwich, but frosted, at least one side will have frosting, making its outermost layer not handheld and, not a sandwich. Buttered toast is also not a sandwich for the same reason: it has butter on its outermost layer, which is not handheld.

What is Handheld?

If an item can't be held with the fingers in a spread position, it's not handheld. Examples are:

  • Water

  • Air

  • Melted Butter

Some items might be handheld on their own, but not when applied to other items, as you couldn't hold onto the layer and would have to penetrate your fingers through it to hold onto the other layer. Items like this could be:

  • Frosting

  • Egg on Toast

  • Mayonnaise

I hope you learnt something today. This is official and if someone says otherwise then they are wrong because I said so. Tune in tomorrow for more posts from yours truly, or read yesterdays post. Take care.
